Practical Firefighing for Boaters Overview

This course provides practical fire safety training for recreational boaters, allowing you to quickly and confidently control small fires onboard a boat or at a marina.

You complete a short online learning course at your own pace, followed by hands-on equipment training and assessment in a simulated marine fire environment.

It is designed for boaters of all experience levels who want practical, usable fire response skills, and is a natural follow-up to completing a boat licence course.

CPPFES2005 – Demonstrate first attack firefighting equipment

This course is a natural extension of other recommended training: our Advanced Marine First Aid Course keeps you prepared for medical emergencies, while our NSW Boat Licence Course ensures you’re following the waterway rules.

This course has no pre-requisite knowledge requirements.

All e-learning and theory assessment must be completed before attending the course in person.

Participants must be physically able to lift and manipulate training equipment such as fire extinguishers for short periods.

All training and assessment will be done in English, requiring basic levels of reading, writing, and language ability. Please contact us if you have any concerns.

Do I need any experience to take this course?

No experience is required. The course is designed for boaters of all levels and starts with the fundamentals before moving into practical use of fire equipment.

Most participants have never used firefighting equipment before attending.

Is this course specific to boating fires?

Yes. While the training follows a nationally recognised unit, the scenarios and examples are adapted to boating and marina environments so the skills are directly applicable on the water.

Fires behave differently on a boat due to fuel systems, confined spaces, and limited escape options, and the content is tailored for this setting.

Is this course relevant for recreational boats, not just workplaces?

Yes. This course is specifically contextualised for recreational boating.

Training focuses on real-world scenarios commonly faced on small boats, including fuel, engine, and electrical fire risks.

What equipment will I learn to use?

You’ll learn to safely and effectively use fire extinguishers, fire hose reels, and fire blankets, including when each is appropriate and when it should not be used.

Will I actually use fire extinguishers during the course?

Yes. The training includes hands-on use of firefighting equipment in controlled scenarios using real fire.

This is a practical firefighting course for boaters designed to build confidence, not just theory.

What time does the course run?

Courses typically begin in the early afternoon (around 1:00 PM). Exact start times will be confirmed in your booking email and may vary depending on the day’s schedule.

How long does the course take to complete?

Most students complete the full course in around 2–3 hours, depending on group size and conditions.

The course includes up to 1.5 hours of online learning plus 1.5 hours of practical training and assessment.

What will I be able to do after the course?

You’ll be able to recognise different types of fires, choose the correct equipment, and respond safely to small onboard fires – including knowing when not to attempt suppression.

Is this nationally recognised training?

Yes. On successful completion of the Practical Firefighting for Boaters course, you will receive a Statement of Attainment for CPPFES2005 – Demonstrate first attack firefighting equipment.

What do I need to bring?

Bring your ID (such as a NSW Drivers Licence, Passport, Medicare Card), a black or blue ballpoint pen, and comfortable practical clothing.

What is the cancellation/refund policy?

You can see the refund policy on the student resources page

Where is my e-learning login information?

You’ll receive this by email after you complete a booking – if you can’t find it, please contact us

Can I complete the certification entirely online?

No, the certification requires in-person physical assessment of your skills and cannot be completed entirely online – however it does save time in the classroom to cover the theory first.
