Essential Marine First Aid Course Overview
This course prepares you to respond to common First Aid emergencies in marine environments, where help may not be immediately nearby.
It is designed for recreational boaters, passengers, fishing crews, marina users, and anyone who spends time on or around the water.
Marine conditions can add extra challenges – movement, wet surfaces, weather exposure, and limited space all affect how emergencies are managed.
Below is an overview of the training provided, which focuses on practical, accessible skills to help you respond with confidence:
Marine-Focused Training
- Manage casualties in a wet marine environment
- Respond to maritime emergencies including drowning
- Treat marine animal stings and bites
- Improvise bandages and slings if supplies are low
- Make emergency marine radio calls
CPR
- Deliver CPR safely to a casualty
- Understand consent and duty of care requirements
- Demonstrate rescue breathing techniques
- Perform chest compressions
- Operate an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
First Aid
- Assess and respond to emergency situations
- Follow the DRS ABCD action plan
- Manage risk in extreme weather conditions
- Record and report information for casualty hand-off
- Use personal protective equipment (PPE)
Serious Medical Conditions
- Manage asthma, anaphylaxis, choking, drowning, and shock
- Control bleeding (cuts and nosebleeds)
- Clean and dress non-life-threatening wounds and burns
- Limit further harm in case of head, neck, or spinal injuries
- Apply sling to support strains, sprains, or fractures
- Manage envenomation and immobilise limbs safely
- Respond to poisoning, including chemical exposures
- Manage heat exposure (hyperthermia), cold exposure (hypothermia), and dehydration

For Cardiac Arrests use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
Deck crew may become injured in the slippery Marine environment
Scratches and cuts can be managed with bandages or adhesives
Two responders can work together as a team to provide first aid
Marina staff can experience mild head injuries and bumps
Cardiac events occur without warning, even in a maritime setting
Yachts and even powerboats involve physical work, sometimes injury
Wet weather or people overboard can lead to hypothermia and exposure
A temporary splint may be required as part of the first aid response
The course runs in the morning, beginning around 8:00AM
Bring your ID (such as a NSW Drivers Licence, Passport, Medicare Card), a black or blue ballpoint pen, and comfortable practical clothing
