Advanced Marine First Aid Course Overview

This course prepares you to deliver First Aid in Marine and remote environments, where access for medical responders may be delayed or unavailable.

It is designed for people who frequently spend time around vessels – boat owners, marina staff, or offshore crew.

These higher pressure situations can involve confined spaces, slippery surfaces, extreme weather, limited supplies – knowing how to adapt is key.

Below is a breakdown of the key skills and scenarios covered in the Advanced Marine First Aid Course, along with prerequisites and assessment information.

Example Training Scenarios

Marine First Aid responder on a boat treating casualty with cut to inner forearm

Scenario 1: Forearm Cut

Responding to an unexpected cut injury to the inside of a forearm while onboard, controlling bleeding and applying a secure bandage in a wet, moving environment.

Scenario 2: Traumatic Blood Loss

Manage severe bleeding following a traumatic injury onboard, apply a tourniquet to control blood loss, and stabilise the casualty in a confined marine environment.

Scenario 3: Arm Dislocation

Assess a suspected arm sprain or dislocation, control the injured limb and apply an appropriate sling while maintaining stability and preventing further harm.

Scenario 4: Fall Injury

Support a crew member with a lower‑leg injury after a slip onboard, using available equipment such as a boat hook and bandages to create a makeshift splint and limit movement.

The following sections outline the core skills and competencies required to manage medical emergencies in remote marine environments:

Marine-Focused Training

  • Communicate and coordinate help when immediate emergency response is unavailable via Marine VHF Radio, Flares, EPIRBs and more

CPR

  • Deliver CPR in confined or moving environments
  • Position and manage a casualty without assistance
  • Perform effective compressions on unstable surfaces
  • Maintain effective CPR over extended periods if help is delayed
  • Operate an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) in marine conditions

First Aid

  • Take control in remote emergency situations with delayed response times
  • Apply the DRSABCD framework under pressure
  • Continuously assess risk to yourself and the casualty
  • Make treatment decisions with limited equipment or support
  • Adapt first aid procedures when conditions affect visibiity, access, or control

Serious Medical Conditions

  • Recognise and manage life-threatening conditions including asthma, anaphylaxis, choking, drowning, and shock
  • Control bleeding in dynamic or confined environments
  • Treat wounds and burns with available resources
  • Manage head, neck, and spinal injuries where movement is restricted
  • Support fractures, sprains, and dislocations with improvised methods if necessary
